Character Traits
As mentioned in a previous post, I have created a Story Elements Unit based on Olivia and Lilly. As many of us do, we reuse units or lesson but modifying it to the needs of our new class. I had done this unit two years ago, and last year with my third graders but used different characters that were suitable for my third graders. This year since I am teaching 2nd graders again I decided to use Olivia and Lilly. I went though the unit with great success until I hit, character traits. My students were having difficulty understanding this concept so I had to create something fun and artistic that would grab their attention and they will be able to understand the concept.
I came up with this idea:
1. First I showed the students these two wonderful videos that I found on YouTube.
2. I showed the students this graphic organizer and we discussed one trait for Olivia.

4. On each rectangular sections students wrote a character trait for Olivia with an example form the story that supported the trait.
5. Students received a picture of Olivia to color and then cut in half. I used this picture.
6. On the top part of the paper students glued the top portion of Olivia and then they did the same for the bottom.
Students enjoyed this project that they asked to do the same for Lilly. Lilly was a bit more complicated.
